Why does my PVS-14 show no image at all?
A completely black tube is the scariest symptom and the least likely to be real damage. Run this list in order; each step is more common than the next:
- Battery orientation. A single CR123 or AA inserted backwards produces exactly nothing, no warning light, no hum. Pull it, check the polarity marking inside the cap, reseat it.
- Battery contacts. A weak spring or oxidation film can break the circuit even with a fresh cell. Wipe both contacts dry and try a second battery before concluding anything.
- Lens cap. The pinhole daylight cap makes the image so dark indoors that a running tube can read as dead. Confirm the objective is actually clear.
- Switch position. Half-seated between the off, momentary and on detents, the tube stays dark. Turn fully to ON and listen for the faint whine of the power supply spinning up.

Why is the image dim or washed out?
A dim tube is usually a tube being told to be dim. In order:
- Manual gain turned down. On variable-gain units the gain knob may have rotated against a pouch or strap. Bring it up slowly and watch the image climb.
- Dying battery. Tubes brown out gradually, not all at once. A cell at the end of its life gives you a soft, low-contrast image long before it gives you black. Swap first, diagnose second.
- Bright-light protection engaged. Autogating and the bright-source cutoff dim the tube on purpose around streetlights, headlights and lit windows. Step into real shadow for thirty seconds and see if the image recovers before blaming hardware.
- Caps and filters. A daylight training filter or sacrificial window left on the objective quietly eats light all night.
A tube that stays dim in genuine darkness with a fresh battery and full gain may be showing real wear, which has its own timeline and symptoms.
Why is everything blurry no matter what I do?
Focus order. This one catches almost every new owner, because the PVS-14 has two focus adjustments and they must be set in sequence. The diopter (eyepiece) focuses your eye on the image intensifier's screen; the objective (front lens) focuses the scene onto the tube. Set the diopter first, on the image's grain or a bright edge, until the "snow" itself is sharp. Only then touch the objective to bring the scene in. Are the spots in my image damage or normal?

Flicker has two common causes. Rhythmic flicker that follows your footsteps or a tap on the housing is a battery contact issue: a worn spring or a slightly short cell losing contact under vibration. Clean the contacts, try a different brand of battery, and it usually disappears. Rapid shimmer near streetlights or headlights is autogating doing its job, switching the tube thousands of times a second to protect itself, and it is normal behavior, not a fault.
